February 15, 2011 – 11:00am At 1:05am Windsor Fire received a call about a fire at 1030 Walker Road in Walkerville. Flames began engulfing the businesses in the building that include The Party Warehouse, Champion Products and The Janitor Store/The Clean Depot. To battle the blaze, Windsor Fire is utilizing the services of 40 firefighters and 9 pieces of large fire equipment, including 1 truck borrowed from Tecumseh Fire. Lee Tome, Chief Fire Prevention Officer for Windsor Fire estimates that crews will need several more hours to control the blaze. Tome did not know the cause of the fire and said that they would need to enter the building to determine where the fire started. After the fire is put out a structural analysis will be conducted to determine the stability of building and whether it is safe to enter for further investigation. Even after the fire is put out, at least 1 fire truck will stay on scene for the rest of the day. Area residents are concerned about the fumes coming from the building, wondering if chemicals from The Janitor Store would be carried in with the heavy smoke. An unnamed resident of Monmouth Road said, “They should have evacuated us. Who knows what we are breathing in right now?” Linda Dawson lives on the east side of Monmouth Road and saw the flames from her rear window at 3:00 a.m. “I saw all this flickering and I went to the window and just saw flames everywhere. It looked like it was coming from [The Janitor Store] and was spreading to the other areas of the building.” If you are driving near the scene, note that Windsor Fire has blocked off the area from Niagara to Ontario and St. Luke to Monmouth. The traffic lights at Walker Road and Riverside Drive and Walker Road and Wyandotte are out but Windsor Police are on scene directing traffic.
