It happens every January 1st. You start the New Year with a list of ways you want to improve yourself. You want to lose some weight, eat healthier, quit smoking, learn a new language, date more, date less, start taking yoga classes, take up the violin and so on and so forth. While self-improvement is important, and we must always make time to take care of ourselves, it is just as enriching to make resolutions that will benefit others rather than just yourself. This could be through charitable giving, acts of kindness (both random and planned), and doing nice things for your close friends and family.
Here are some heartwarming resolutions you can make for 2016:
Donate to charity
Whether you make a monetary donation, or donate your time to a cause you believe in, your efforts will make a difference. There are so many charitable organizations out there – supporting causes local and abroad – surly there will be one that resonates with you. Whether you’re donating money to find a cure for a terminal illness, or volunteering to help the less fortunate, acts of charity are the ultimate New Year’s Resolution.

Food Banks Canada
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada
Get involved in the community
They say charity begins at home – so it makes sense to support projects within your own community. Whether you volunteer at your children’s school, join a local citizen committee, or help out at your church, library or community centre you can make a difference. Find a local cause you feel passionately about and find out how you can help.
Whether you offer to shovel an elderly neighbour’s driveway in the winter, or cut the family across the street’s lawn while they’re on holidays, in 2016 you should resolve to do more for your neighbours. You can do small things too, such as invite them over for coffee, or bring them some baked goods you made. If you don’t know your neighbours well, the New Year is the perfect time to change that!
Make memories for your loved ones
Doing more for others doesn’t have to mean just helping strangers; you can resolve to do more for your close friends and family in 2016. This could mean planning fun outings for your kids, such as bowling, skiing, mini putting and more! Another way to show your loved ones you care is to surprise them with a day of pampering, such as paying for a mani/pedi for your mom, or a massage for your best friend.
In the end you will benefit as well from helping and supporting others. You can build stronger bonds with your community and family, and feel good knowing you did your part and hopefully made someone’s day.
