TIFF Q&A: ‘Sally Draper’ takes your questions on Mad Men and her dream movie role

Kiernan Shipka talks about her new movie, filming in an Ottawa winter and answers questions from fans

As the melancholic Sally Draper on Mad Men, Kiernan Shipka nearly stole the series in its final seven episodes. But on the weekend, meeting media in the vacant white space that will become Italian restaurant FIGO on Adelaide St., Shipka was looking to the future — specifically the half-hour in the future when she’d be hopping a plane to New York Fashion Week. “I changed out of my . . . deal,” she explains, apologetic, when asked about her actress-off-duty look, an oversized striped shirt, jeans and Vans sneakers.

The evening before, the 15-year-old showed why she’s flush with Fashion Week invites, attending the TIFF premiere of February in a strapless yellow Delpozo dress. The art-house horror film is about two teenage girls stranded at boarding school during winter break, while Emma Roberts plays an escapee from a psych ward. Briskly but cheerfully, Shipka described her dark new role, filming during an Ottawa winter and why she just can’t wait for the temperature to plunge.

February is inspired by the character-driven supernatural horror of the ’70s and ’80s. Did you watch anything to prepare?

I did! The Shining, Carrie, Rosemary’s Baby, Eraserhead. They definitely informed what the mood of the film was going to be, which then informed my performance.

You give a dark, crazy performance. What was it like to stand in front of an audience of people at the premiere after watching that?

It was funny! The first time that I saw it was at a screening. There were maybe 10 people there. That almost felt more awkward. Afterwards you have everyone look at you and go, OKKKK! I’m like, I promise I’m cool guys.

Do you get scared in horror movies?

I get excited. I’m not one to get too scared.

You are celebrated for your personal style. What are you loving right now?

I am just looking forward to the day where I can wear a coat. Any coat! All the coats. I love a plaid. I love anything bold and statement-y. I like a sweater with a collar underneath it.

You filmed this in Ottawa during the coldest February in 115 years. How did you entertain yourself?

That extraordinarily cool ice rink that spans the city (the Rideau Canal) is amazing. People can travel to work via ice rink!

Toronto Star readers pose their most pressing questions for Kiernan Shipka.

“What is your all-time favourite Mad Men memory?”

— @IStandByHale

Too many to count, but after we wrapped we all sat around and played Catchphrase for hours. It was just lovely.

“Did you get to keep anything from the Mad Men set after you wrapped?”

— @natalieamberbel

I got to keep the necklace that my character wore. It said SBD, her initials.

“What is your dream movie role?”

— @MissTweetTeach

I don’t have a particular dream movie role because in this industry it’s hard to predict, but I have dream people I want to work with. I would love to work with Julianne Moore, Bill Murray. I love Sofia Coppola, Kristen Stewart. A bunch of people.

“What kind of music do you like?”

— @electricsung

I have my go-tos, which would be Blood Orange, Future Islands, T. Swift, Haim. Radiator Hospital. Beyoncé. Solange.

“How would you feel about starring in a Mad Men sequel in the future where Sally becomes the new Don Draper as an ad executive?”

— Margaret Boucher

Well . . . what a question! I’m down to revisit Miss SDB. She’s awesome.
