Instagram has eliminated millions of fake and spam accounts from the online photo-sharing service, outraging many users who lost followers.
“In December 2014, we’re fixing an ongoing issue that incorrectly includes inactive or fake accounts in follower/following lists,” the company explained in a recent post.
Instagram did not respond immediately to a request for exact numbers, but accounts belonging to some celebrities lost millions of followers.
Here are the top celebrity losses:
Justin Bieber, who has the second most followed account on Instagram after Instagram itself, lost about 3.47 million followers and is down to 20.3 million, according to archived numbers from SocialBlade.com, which tracks social media statistics.
Singer Ariana Grande lost about 1.4 million.
Kim Kardashian lost 1.2 million.
Beyoncé lost about 692,000.
Harry Styles of One Direction lost 784,008.
Many users vented their frustration in photos posted to the company’s official Instagram account.
Commenting on one such photo, which shows a woman and child near Kabul, Afghanistan, one user wrote: “F*** YOU INSTAGRAM HONESTLY F*** U I LOST 50 FOLLOWERS F4F IF YOU DISLIKE ARIANA.”
“I lost 150 and the happiness that came with finally reaching 1,000,” another user wrote on one of Instagram’s photos.
“There’s so much chaos going on in this world and you all are freaking out over lost followers? If people would put this much energy into something that actually mattered, this world would be a better place. So pathetic,” another wrote.
