My Big Fat Greek Wedding getting a sequel

Get ready for My Big Fat Greek Wedding, the sequel.

Variety and The Hollywood Reporter say Playtone, Gold Circle and HBO Films are developing a followup to the 2002 smash hit, which was written by and starred Winnipeg native Nia Vardalos.

Based on her one-woman stage show, My Big Fat Greek Wedding earned more than $241 million (U.S.) when it was released in 2002 and Vardalos was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

The online publications said Vardalos would write and star in the sequel and that John Corbett, who played her non-Greek husband, would also return.

The new film is to feature a Portokalos family secret and an even bigger wedding.

“Now that I’m experiencing motherhood, I’m ready to write the next chapter of my family story,” Vardalos was quoted as saying. “Of course, a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true.”
