Pan Am Games: Women’s triathlon Saturday

Paula Findlay is the most recognizable Canadian name in the sport after she struggled through injuries and finished at the back of the field at the London Olympics

WOMEN’S TRIATHLON

WHERE: Ontario Place west channel, Exhibition grounds

WHEN: 8:30 a.m. Saturday

NEED TO KNOW: A gruelling event a 1.5-kilometre open swim, a 40-kilometre bike race followed by a 10-kilometre run.

Findlay is the most recognizable name after she struggled through injuries and finished at the back of the field at the 2012 London Olympics. She has doggedly trained to get back in top shape and had an eighth-place finish at a World Triathlon Series event in London earlier this year.

“It’s her opportunity to come back at a competition on this level after her experience at London 2012, which I think is an amazing story and an amazing opportunity to set the tone for what this team will look like at these Games,” Canada chef de mission Curt Harnett said.

LITTLE KNOWN FACT: If the water temperature is below 14C athletes are required to wear wetsuits; if it’s above 20C wetsuits are forbidden.
