WHAT: Roller figure skating
WHERE: Exhibition Centre
WHEN: Women’s short program 4:20 p.m. Saturday, men’s short program 6 p.m. Saturday.
WHAT IS IT: Exactly like it sounds. It’s figure skating with four wheels instead of a skate blade, hardwood instead of ice. But with the same jumps and moves that have become so popular in the winter sport.
This has been part of the Pan Am Games since 1979 — though it was left off the program in 1983 — and mirrors its winter cousin.
Athletes do a short program that’s two minutes, 15 seconds long, has required elements and is worth 25 per cent of the final mark.
The free program is four minutes long and, while there are some required elements, it’s a mix of jumps, spins and footwork.
Canada has one entrant, Kailah Macri in the women’s event, and she’s hoping to improve on a fifth-place Pan Am finish four years ago.
Medals will be awarded Sunday night.
