While most coyotes are out looking for love at this time of season, one coyote still has time for leisure and play.
Heather Roynon was getting ready for work when she noticed a coyote galloping around in the daytime near her Fort Erie, Ont., home. Quickly grabbing her camera, she took a video of the coyote playing with her neighbour’s dog’s toy ball.
“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing at first,” Roynon said. “It was pretty exciting to see that moment of a wild animal acting like a goofy puppy.”
In the video, the coyote clenches onto a toy ball by its teeth as it drags its new found treasure up a snowy slope. With a concentrated gaze on the ball, the coyote watches the toy roll back down the hill and springs to chase the escaping ball.
After three short journeys up and down the grassy incline in a self-provoked game of fetch, the coyote leaves the toy, and sprints around in circles before escaping back into the forest.
“It's kinda overwhelming that so many people are interested in it,” Roynon said.
Since she uploaded the video to YouTube last Saturday, there have been 250,000 views of the frolicking coyote. Many coyote non-profit groups have also shared the video on their Facebook pages and websites.
Roynon hasn’t seen the coyote since, but doesn’t mind a reappearance of the fun animal.
“It’s pretty rare to see a coyote around here, even though we hear them howling all the time,” she said. “It would be a pleasant surprise if he came back.”
