What do you think of this viral Christmas video?

German supermarket commercial with a twist has more than 20 million views to date

OurWindsor.Ca

A German supermarket commercial released for the holidays has gone viral on YouTube, garnering more than 20 million views in less than a week.

But does it pull at your heart strings, or test your gag reflex?

The jury appears to be out.

The EDEKA supermarket video opens on a German grandfather coming home to a voicemail message from his daughter, who says she is too busy to come home for Christmas this year.

The old man appears sitting alone at a dinner table, with a lonely glass of wine and a depressing meal cooked for one in front of him.

Then the video takes an unexpected turn.

There’s more, of course, but we wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise.

Watch and decide for yourself: Sweet or strange?

Absolutely it "pullls at the heart strings" and that is what it is suppose to do and I agree with all your comments but, commercials like these at Christmas make it even harder to bare when there is no "happy ending" or there is nobody else to fill the empty voiid..... that's why it is the loneliness component during holidays, especially at Christmas - God bless everyone !!! This particular season "amplifies" loneliness for the lonely.

This is why Advertising in Europe works! No boundaries and boarders, but gets across the message. There would be rage all across the Country if Canadians or Americans published something like this.

It broke my heart and brought a tear to my eye. It conveys a very powerful and emotional message. I applaud the marketing strategy behind it.

Most awesome commercial I've seen in a long time. We all have someone we need to think about.
