Charges laid in June Hwy. 401 fatal Whitby crash

Truck driver Steven Reid turns himself in to police

WHITBY -- The driver of a transport truck has now been charged in connection with a June fatal accident on Hwy. 401 in Whitby.

Manu Goswami, 29, of Scarborough, was killed in the crash, and two other people were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police said a transport truck, two passenger cars and a large motor coach bus were involved in the June 24 crash at the Thickson Road exit, which shut down westbound lanes of the highway.

According to Ontario Provincial Police, the westbound transport truck hit a westbound Toyota Corolla carrying three people, including Mr. Goswami, who was a rear passenger. A Pontiac Sunfire and a fully loaded Setra tour bus were involved in secondary collisions. There were no injuries among the 38 bus passengers, police said.

On Dec. 17, Steven Reid, 39, of Campbellford, turned himself in to police, OPP said. He is charged with dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm, and was held in custody for a bail hearing.

Mr. Reid is scheduled to return to court Jan. 8.
