New Brunswick premier backs Wynne on TransCanada pipeline conditions

Brian Gallant said the proposed $12-billion Energy East Pipeline should be good for all of Canada after meeting with Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne

New Brunswick Premier Brian Gallant says the proposed $12-billion Energy East Pipeline Project should be good for all of Canada.

During Gallant’s visit with Premier Kathleen Wynne Monday, the two talked about the TransCanada project to pump crude oil from Alberta to New Brunswick, among other things. His visit was hard on the heels of a joint Ontario-Quebec cabinet meeting Friday where the provinces put forward several conditions for giving their stamp of approval to the controversial pipeline project.

The Liberal premier told reporters the list of seven conditions from the central provinces — including consulting First Nations, an emergency response plan, guarantees that Ontario's current supply of natural gas is secure and a plan to tackle climate change — is “very, very reasonable.”

“I think everyone would agree with them . . . it is important for us to ensure that all provinces in the country as a whole will benefit from this project,” he told reporters at Queen’s Park.

TransCanada wants to convert its 40-year-old natural gas pipeline from Saskatchewan to Ontario to carry crude oil, connect it with a new pipeline it plans to construct through Quebec and on to export terminals and refineries in New Brunswick, and from there to Europe, India, China and the U.S. by tanker.

Meanwhile, Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall said he believes the premiers from Ontario and Quebec are creating “unnecessary barriers” to the project, which he calls straightforward.
