Pittsburgh Post-Gazette publishes positive, pre-scandal Jian Ghomeshi story

Looking at the front page of the free version of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is like going back in time

In the free Sunday Extra copy of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette it was as if this past week never happened.

The front page story was about Jian Ghomeshi — but it was a glowing profile of the broadcaster focused on his experiences as an immigrant to Canada.

There was no mention of the nine women alleging the fired CBC radio star physically and sexually assaulted them (Ghomeshi has maintained all his sexual interactions were consensual) or the ongoing criminal investigation by the sex crimes unit.

The story itself was published online on Oct. 20, part of a year-long series on new immigrants that profiles Toronto among other cities.

Post-Gazette executive editor David Shribman told the Star that the free paper, which repurposes old articles and is sent out as a promotion to non-subscribers, was laid out on Oct. 22 and printed on Oct. 23 — days before the Ghomeshi story broke.

In the newspaper business “sometimes these things happen,” Shribman said.

An update was posted at the top of online version of the Ghomeshi interview on Sunday afternoon.

“At the next printing of the Sunday Extra the PG will provide a clarifying note explaining these circumstances,” it reads.
