The CBC announced Tuesday that it has partnered with Rogers and Bell to secure the rights to the 2018 and 2020 Olympic Games.
The move comes nearly a year after Rogers’ $5.2 billion broadcast deal with the NHL pushed CBC to the periphery of big-time sports broadcasting in Canada. President and CEO Hubert Lacroix says the deal signals that CBC will continue to take sports seriously.
“We’ll see what happens (in the future), he said. “But for now I can assure you that our Olympic vision is met with this announcement.”
The 2018 Winter Games are in PyeongChang, South Korea, and the 2020 Summer Olympics are in Tokyo.
CBC had the broadcast rights for this year’s Sochi Olympics and will show the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The broadcaster reclaimed the rights to those Games after being on the sidelines for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the 2012 London Games.
