If you haven't heard about the Ice Bucket Challenge it is time to get your head out of your... the sand.
So what is the Ice Bucket Challenge all about? Basically it is a social media campaign that aims to raise awareness and money to fight ALS - also commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease. You dump a bucket of ice water over your head, challenge your friend(s) to do the same, and then post to your social accounts. #IceBucketChallenge
How are the funds raised for ALS? Simple. If you do not take on the challenge with in 24 hours of being called out... than you are asked to make a donation to ALS. Much like Prime Minister Stephen Harper (called out by no other than Rob Ford) and President Barack Obama (called out by Justin Bieber and Lebron James). Though we secretly believe Obama did it anyway.
Of course, many who take on the challenge also donate. At the time this article was published, almost $13 million has been raised for the cause.
Why has it taken off? Well we humans need little encouragement to do stupid things and then post it on the Internet to live forever. Regardless, it's a great cause.
According to ALS.ca - Lou Gerig's disease is a progressive neuromuscular disease in which nerve cells die and leave voluntary muscles paralyzed. Every day two or three Canadians die of the disease. The disease takes its own course with each individual. Professor Stephen Hawking, genius physicist, is a rare case as he has lived with the disease for over 50 years.
Ever wonder what it would be like to live with ALS? Bo Stern's blog post is a great place to start.
