Man drives car into police cruiser in attempt to avoid arrest

Windsor Police have laid multiple charges on a driver who smashed into a police cruiser in an attempt to flee the scene.

At approximately 9:30 p.m. on June 26, a WPS Sergeant on patrol was driving westbound on Wyandotte St E at George Ave when a collision involving two vehicles behind her occurred. The officer then activated her roof lights and turned around to investigate the collision. At this point, the driver of a silver SUV with heavy front-end damage sped away from the scene headed south on George Ave.

Attempts at stopping the vehicle were unsuccessful as the driver managed to speed away each time police approached the vehicle.

At approximately 9:50 p.m., police received a report of an impaired driver in the area of Huron Church Rd northbound towards Malden Rd. The vehicle was the same silver SUV with front-end damage.

Officers attempted to corral the SUV with police cruisers at the intersection of Huron Church and Malden. The driver reversed the SUV and then accelerated into the side of the police cruiser blocking its path.

The driver fled the scene northbound on Malden, but was eventually located in a parking lot near the area of Hill St and Peter St. He was then placed under arrest.

Rafal Christopher Jopek, 35, was charged with several impaired driving-related offences, as well as two counts of dangerous driving, two counts of leaving an accident scene, and two counts of failing to stop for police.
