Leamington farmers sign deal to grow tomatoes for Highbury

Highbury CanCo president confirms that the company has contracted 10 local tomato farmers

A number of Leamington tomato farmers have agreed to produce tomatoes for the company slated to assume operations at the Heinz plant.

Highbury Canco president, and former Heinz plant manager, Sam Diab confirmed that 10 tomato farmers have been contracted to produce tomatoes for the company.

The 10 producers are but a fraction of the 43 area farmers that grew tomatoes for Heinz, however more may sign on in the months to come. Blackburn News is reporting that five of the growers are in Chatham-Kent, four are in Leamington, and one is located near Harrow.

Earlier last week, tomato processing competitor Thomas Canning announced a $25 million deal to export their Utopia brand tomato products to Nigeria.
