Windsor kids in hospital receive toys for the holidays

Children staying in paediatric services at Windsor Regional Hospital have received a little help from triOS College’s Windsor campus.

Representatives from the private college delivered 10 bags of toys and a $200 cheque to Windsor Regional Hospital Metropolitan Campus Monday morning.

Anne Zakoor, triOS campus director, said the college chose paediatric services to make the children smile.

“We just thought we’d give them a little token from us,” she said. “It’s unfortunate that they’re sick and we’re just hoping to brighten some days.”

Windsor Regional childlife specialist Jen Burton-Liang said a lot of organizations and individuals have donated to paediatrics this holiday season. Some of the toys will be handed out and others will stay in hospital.

“We restock our crafts area and all those treasure boxes that are throughout the unit,” said Burton-Liang. “It helps us replenish our supplies, so we really, really appreciate it and rely on it every year.”

The children receiving these toys range from new births to 16-year-olds.

Burton-Liang said sometimes the older teenagers are forgotten.

“New release DVDs are great. Portable DVD players are fantastic. Gift cards for the older teenagers, maybe to go see a movie at the movie theatre,” said Burton-Liang of some of the preferred donations. “They’re always very welcomed, but we appreciate anything we can get.”

For toddlers, she said toys with buttons and lights are always nice to have.

Another donation of toys from the Ciociaro Club of Windsor valued at approximately $1,000 was expected Monday, but moved to next week.

To make a donation to paediatrics or a different program, contact the Windsor/Essex Hospitals Foundation.

Zakoor said triOS also participates in the hospital’s Hats on for Healthcare campaign every February.

While this is the only donation the local campus is making for the holidays, Zakoor said it plans to organize a fundraiser for area food banks in the new year.

“We figure everyone is doing them prior to Christmas, so we’re going to do them after,” she said.
