Thinking about starting a diet? The differences between the big four

There is not one of us who haven’t tried a diet or know someone who is always on one in the hopes they finally achieve the weight loss they desire.

Four of the most popular ones are Jenny Craig, Dr. Bernstein, Herbal Magic and Weight Watchers. But what are the differences between these diets? How do they work and which one would be best for you to try?

Jenny Craig claims to be a one-of-a-kind diet system that hinges its success on the fact that the client gets one-on-one support from a consultant, meals that are pre-planned, made and delivered. The combination of support and variety of meals offered means you will never feel alone or like you’re on a diet. The meals are designed by nutritionists with guidance from the Jenny Craig Medical Advisory Board.

Dr. Bernstein claims they can help you lose weight quickly, safely and naturally, with the support and guidance of the staff at their diet and health clinics. Dr. Bernstein is an MD who helps people lose weight to regain their health and vitality.

The program is managed by specially-trained doctors and nurses and it works by creating a specifically tailored diet for the individuals weight-loss needs, vitamin and mineral supplements and behaviour modification counselling. The very low calorie intake results in losing weight fast, keeping people encouraged to move forward while they learn the skills to maintain their weight loss. This diet has 2 phases: weight loss and the maintenance phase to help prevent rebound weight gain.

Herbal Magic promotes lifestyle changes to deliver healthy, long-lasting weight loss. The program combines food that is purchased at any grocery store, a personal coach whose purpose is to motivate and support, and natural health products. This means, eating properly and getting active. The personal health coach, will custom-design a weight loss program for the client and also meet them weekly to provide support and nutritional education. If you are not interested in purchasing a diet plan, their website offers many healthy recipes.

Weight Watchers is based on a eating foods with a points system, as well as providing motivational meetings and support via a weight-loss mentor. They will design an individualized weight-loss plan that does not cut out the foods you love to eat. This diet plan is all about portion control and moderation.

This program seems to be the most involved with the individual, offering personal strategies and advice, 24/7 support line, apps on restaurants where they will tell you the points of the food, an online database of thousands of recipes and a group mentality support and success system.

If you are thinking about starting a diet program, always consult your doctor first to make sure it is safe for you. And remember, dieting is not just about loosing weight - it is about learning tools and implementing new practices that will lead to a healthier lifestyle.
