Great products, friendly service hallmarks at Smiths

Old Man Winter has done his worst. In fact, the season was so entrenched in Eastern Ontario some were beginning to wonder if spring would ever arrive. But one stop into Smiths Equipment Centre just south of Smiths Falls off Highway 15 and one not only can sense spring, it brings vivid visions of summer fun.

Offering the outdoor enthusiast everything from motorbikes to personal watercraft, All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) to lawn tractors and garden equipment, Smiths Equipment has what you’re looking for whether on land or water.

If you’re looking to let the good times roll, why not start with the great lineup of Kawasaki motorcycles and dirt bikes.  They also carry a wide selection of parts and accessories including helmets, gloves, jackets and more.

For the water, Kawasaki also offers a selection of personal watercraft and this year, Smiths Equipment is also offering its ever-expanding customer base G3 Boats by Yamaha.

It just seemed to be a natural move for us,” says Mark Smith, co-owner of this third generation business with his brother Robert.

G3 aluminum boats “have been around for a while in the States,” he adds, noting the Yamaha brand is renowned within the industry. Smiths will carry a wide selection of boats under the G3 banner sure to satisfy every fishing enthusiast.  And the G3 line of SunCatcher pontoon boats is highly-regarded for quality and workmanship.

“They out-feature a lot of the competition,” Mark explains.

Back on land, there’s a wide cross section of Kawasaki ATVs as well as push and riding mowers from Ariens and Gravely.

There’s also an impressive selection of Kioti tractors in stock, ready to handle any job on the farm.

Well-known for its broad assortment of trailers, Smiths Equipment Centre has added a new line – Sure-Trac – to the on-site lineup for this year.

“Trailers are a big part of the business,” says Mark. “This year we picked up a new line which will give us a larger product offering again.”

The wide variety includes utility, cargo, heavy equipment, livestock, and mobile storage. Full parts and service for all product lines sold as well as most competitive brands is a feature for this location.

Smiths Equipment Centre first opened its doors in 2008. Located at 327-A Hwy. 15, it’s perfectly situated in rural eastern Ontario between Ottawa and Kingston. To better accommodate the new lines being added in 2014, the company has expanded its land holdings, giving it more highway frontage and overall display space.

“This has been in the plans for the last eight months,” Mark explains.

With the new boats and trailers, “we’re going to need more land to display everything,” he says.

Come fall, the business will even be able to offer winterizing and storage of watercraft on site, “an extra service we can offer our customers.”

The business has grown consistently since first opening its doors five years ago. Smiths offers a no-pressure sales environment, something Mark says is appreciated by their customers. If someone is there to browse, they’re free to look. And if they walk in with a specific product in mind, Smiths will do everything to set them up with exactly what they are looking for. If it’s not in the bright and spacious showroom, they will get it for you, he says.

With eight full-time staff on hand, including a licensed motorcycle mechanic, friendly and personal service is their hallmark, prompting customers to return time and again.

Smiths Equipment Centre has grown out of the founding Smiths Farm Equipment Ltd. in Jasper, started by Mark and Robert’s grandfather Raymond and built up by their father. This business has been working for local and area farmers since 1955 and continues to play a valuable role in the community today.

In business now for almost 60 years, the Jasper operation has been a New Holland dealer since 1966, a trusted brand name for top-of-the-line farm equipment including tractors large and small, smaller utility vehicles, round and square balers and much more.

“It’s (Smiths Farm Equipment) been around for so long, it’s so well known with most farmers,” says Mark, who took over ownership of this business with Robert this past year.

New products have been introduced at the site from Landoll which offers a wide range of agricultural tools and equipment to handle all tillage and seedbed preparation needs.

The company has also expanded its sales force in a bid to reach more small acreage owners and municipalities.

“We’re working to maintain our position and trying to grow,” Mark says, noting how fortunate both locations are to have such dedicated staff who are “driven to help us and the customer succeed.”

Everything Smiths offers is backed by their outstanding sales and service that customers have come to count on for almost 60 years.

Whether you’re looking for some fun on the water or landscaping your front yard, Smiths Equipment Centre has just what you need to help you get the most out of your spring, summer and fall. They are open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
