Dance Mob Erupts at Art Gallery
Have you ever been at a mall or a store and suddenly a large group of people around you started dancing, singing or doing something random? Their strange behavior lasting only a couple of minutes and then, as if nothing had transpired, they would disperse back into the crowd? If you answered, “Yes!” then you were a victim of a flash mob, just like the one that occurred at the Art Gallery of Windsor at 4:20pm on Wednesday, March 2.
The term “Flash Mob” was first coined in 2003 after a failed attempt by Harper magazine to assemble a mob. Since then these events have been popping up around the globe in malls, transit stations and other public areas. The idea usually starts off small and then, through social networking, gets bigger until enough people are assembled to make an impact but still remain under the radar to surprise the regular patrons around them. Some of the most famous events include The Worldwide Pillow Fight Day in 2008 and The Tmobile You Make Me Wanna Shout advertisement in 2009 that now has more than 26 million hits on YouTube.
“When Oprah kicked off her season last year that sparked a lot of interest in the flash mob,” explained Kristina Savi-Mascaro about how her sister, Jackie Savi-Cannon got the idea for Wednesday’s flash mob. She is referring to the surprise that a crowd of 20,000 gave Oprah at her 24th season kickoff when they synchronized their dance moves to the Black Eyed Peas’ performance of I Gotta Feeling.
“Jackie has been working on this for quite some time. She just wanted to do something that created a buzz,” said Savi-Mascaro.
And with that idea prepared and rehearsed, forty people ascended on the art gallery and performed to Pink’s song, Raise Your Glass. “Instead of showing you a piece of art we allowed you to become a piece of art,” Jackie explained afterwards to the gallery patrons.

This event was part of TEDxWindsor, an independently organized TED event. TED is a small nonprofit organization that started in 1984 as a conference that incorporates Technology, Entertainment, and Design. As their following grew so did their website which now features seminars and talks by many influential figures of our time like Bill Gates, Al Gore and J.J. Abrams.
